CompuServe, Rebuilt A Historical Preservation Project - Oct 2026

Terms of Use

Last updated: 15 September 2026

The short version.

The board is free, and it is one person’s preservation project on one server. Use it lawfully and decently, look after your own account, and understand that it is provided as is: it can change, go down, or lose what is stored on it. Keep your own copy of anything you would miss.

These Terms of Use (“Terms”) cover your use of compuserveweb.com and the board you dial into from it (together, “the board”), run by its sysop (“we”, “us”). By using the board you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use it.

1. Who may use the board

Anyone who can form a binding agreement with us and who uses the board in keeping with these Terms and the law. The board is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly accept members under 16.

2. Your account

3. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

The board is a recreation of a 1980s service. Post as you would have then: people are reading.

4. What you post

What you write stays yours. By posting a forum message, a file, or anything else on the board, you give us permission to store and display it there as part of the service. You are responsible for having the right to post it.

We may remove any message, file or account - for breaking these Terms, at a member’s request, or to keep the board running. Messages you delete are hidden from view; how long a stored copy is kept is described in the Privacy Policy.

5. The board can change, and can stop

This is a hobby project, not a commercial service. Pages, services and games may be added, changed or withdrawn at any time, and the board may be taken down for maintenance or for good, with or without notice.

6. No warranty, and no guarantee your data is kept

The board is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non‑infringement. We do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted, secure or error‑free.

It runs on a single server. Mail, files, messages, scores and whole accounts can be lost - to a fault, a mistake, an attack, or the project ending. Backups are kept for 30 days and are for our recovery, not a promise to you. Keep your own copy of anything you would miss.

7. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits or goodwill, arising out of or relating to your use of, or inability to use, the board. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law. Access is free, and no account is ever charged.

8. Names, content and the historical material

“CompuServe” is a trademark of its respective owner. This board is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any present or former owner of that name; the page codes, menu wording and screens are reproduced for historical description and educational preservation.

The manuals, magazines and pictures in the gallery belong to their own rights holders, and each item says where it came from. The board’s own software, text and page design are ours; the parts built on other people’s free software are credited on the front page under their own licences.

9. Privacy

How we handle personal information is described in the Privacy Policy, which forms part of these Terms.

10. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms. The “Last updated” date above reflects the latest version, and material changes will be noted here. Using the board after a change means you accept it.

11. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, USA, without regard to its conflict‑of‑laws rules. The state and federal courts in California have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising out of or relating to the board or these Terms, and you consent to that jurisdiction.

12. Contact

The sysop - sysop@compuserveweb.com. Please include your User ID.
